"das volk der mensch" is kind of harder but it means something along the lines of The people [as a mass entity] the people [as lots of individuals]
and then "der wald der baum" is like, the wood, the trees (which I took as meaning something of similar note to not being able to see the wood for the trees, losing sight of the individual amongst the people...... etc etc
Maybe someone better than me at German will come along and clarify
